The modern vintage style is still going strong in the design world today. You see it in different ways-- whether it be the Restoration Hardware look, a more feminine shabby chic look, the industrial look, or an eclectic look. Reclaimed furniture is everywhere, along with linens, character alanine leathers, velvets and silks. People are realizing that it is okay to mix your furniture and that you do not need to have everything matching. Take occasional tables for instance, you can mix a set of end tables with a different coffee table or fabric ottoman. Look at coordinating pieces, rather than matching pieces to add interest to your space.
Coordinating furniture pieces rather than matching them as well as the choice of rustic woods and natural fabrics create a more relaxed, comfortable feel. It adds a hint of luxury and quality but also feels a bit more casual, offering you a place that you feel you can actually live in!
Feel free to mix patterns as long as they associate with each other. For instance, if you have a bold pattern, mix it with other patterns that are very simple, not too detailed and have a similar scale.
If you are mixing your lamps, make sure that if they have metal bases, that they are in the same color family. Make sure that the lamp shades are the same color as well. Also, think about mixing textures. Instead of using all leather in a furniture grouping, mix in some fabrics making sure you have pattern in either your chairs or toss cushions. Look at adding texture in your area rug, throws, draperies and blinds.
Do you have an old cabinet from your Grandmother that you just can't part with? Perfect! Breath new life into it by re-finishing, or painting it a fun color! As long as the piece has good bones and the scale of it works with the rest of your furniture, it can add character to your setting.
If you are overwhelmed with the idea of mixing all of these items together, ask a qualified Designer for some help. A quick consultation can go a long way!
